4 hidden laptop features you should be using to boost productivity

Jul 21, 2023

Did you know that your laptop has some cool features designed to enhance your productivity and make your computing experience more enjoyable? From reducing distractions to maximizing your device’s battery, there are several hacks that allow you to go beyond the basics and make working or studying with your laptop more effortless.

If your device is running on Windows, here are four secret features that you should start using.

1. Stay focused while working with Focus Assist

Notifications from social media, online shopping apps, or emails can be very distracting while working or during meetings. Windows offers a solution for this called “Focus Assist” for Windows 10 or “Focus” for Windows 11. This feature allows you to minimize distractions by selecting which notifications you want to receive and from which apps.

Here’s how to enable it in Windows 10:

  • Click on the “Start” button, then go to “Settings” then “System”.
  • Select “Focus assist”.
  • Choose between three options: “Off” (receive all notifications), “Priority only” (see notifications from a customized list), or “Alarms only” (receive notifications from alarms only).

To customize the applications permitted to send you notifications, click “Customize your priority list” under the “Priority only” setting. You can also select “Show me a summary of what I missed while focus assist was on” to see the notifications that weren’t visible while Focus Assist was active.

In Windows 11, you can choose to hide scrollbars, adjust transparency effects, turn off animations, and dismiss notifications after a set amount of time.

2. Shut down your computer in one slide

Like smartphones, laptops, including Dell’s, can be turned on and shut down with the Power key. But there’s another simple and cool feature to turn off your device: Slide to Shut Down.

Here’s how to enable it:

  • Right click on any vacant space on your Desktop screen.
  • Select “New” from the menu, then  “Shortcut”.
  • In the Create Shortcut window, type C:\Windows\System32\SlideToShutdown.exe in the empty box, then click on “Next”.
  • In the next window, write a suitable name for the shortcut, such as “SlideToShutDown”, then click on “Finish”.

Now that the shortcut has been created, double-click on the icon and enjoy the feature.

3. Reopen a browser tab with CTRL + Shift + T

Have you mistakenly closed a browser tab? Don’t worry! Simply use the keyboard shortcut “Ctrl+Shift+T” to instantly restore that tab. Now you can easily go back to what you were reading or watching.

4. Extend your laptop’s power on battery-saving mode

While the battery-saving mode isn’t a secret, it is often overlooked. This feature allows you to prolong your device’s power (and, ultimately, your battery’s life) so you can accomplish more while on the go.

Follow these steps to optimize your device’s energy and enhance your productivity:

  • Click on the battery icon located on the right side of the taskbar.
  • In Windows 10, select “Battery settings”. In the pop-up window, find and select “Battery Saver”, then disable “Turn the battery saver on automatically”.
  • If your device is running on Windows 11, you can easily activate “Battery saver” by clicking on the battery icon in the taskbar.

By using these little-known laptop features, you can boost your productivity, enhance your focus, and enjoy seamless browsing. Take control of your computing experience with Dell’s technology hacks, top-performing laptops, and accessories.
